There’s something about having a tangible object to hold and behold that continues to appeal. Flyers are easy to post on a wall or the fridge, pass along to someone else, or file away for later reference.

You can find a wide variety of attractive flyer templates on Envato Elements or GraphicRiver.

When Should You Use a Flyer?

Flyers can be quite useful if you know when to use them. You can use flyers in a variety of situations:

  • Leave one behind after a face-to-face meeting.
  • Insert them in other printed pieces, like newspapers, magazines, and swag bags.
  • Place it on windshields and inside (physical) mailboxes for some free advertising.
  • Hand them out during live events.
  • Mail them to your best prospects.

Save the flyer as a PDF and share it digitally as well. It does double duty! The best thing about flyers is, they’ve become incredibly easy to make and inexpensive to duplicate.

In this tutorial, I’ll show you, step-by-step, how to make a terrific-looking flyer using nothing more than Microsoft Word and a template.

How to Make a Flyer in Word, Step-by-step

It’s easy to create a flyer in Word when you begin with a well-designed flyer template editable in Microsoft Word. For this tutorial, I’ll be using the Digital Marketing Agency Flyer template, which is only one of the many flyer templates available on Envato Elements.

Flyer Template for Word - Digital Marketing Agency
Flyer templates editable in Word make it easy for anyone to make great-looking flyers.

Premium templates such as this are great to use because they’re well-designed and easy to customize. Some even come with support from the designer, so aren’t left on your own as you’re creating your flyer.

Tip: Choose a template that’s as close as possible to the final product you want. Flyer templates for Word are customizable, but the fewer customizations you’ve got to make, the faster you can have your flyers out there promoting your business, product, or event.

After you’ve selected the flyer template you wish to use, download it into your computer, then duplicate the file. This way, you’ll always have the original file in case you need to start over, or if you’d like to use the same template for a different flyer.

Step 1. Replace the Placeholder Text With Your Own Info

To replace the placeholder text, double-click on the text. Type your own text.

If your text is longer than what’s in the placeholder, resize the text box. Click, hold, then drag one of the handles of the text box to the desired size.

Tip: Switch to a different font to emphasize parts of the flyer, or to align it with your branding.

To change a font, highlight the text and click the downward arrow beside the font selector. Then scroll down to find the font you want to use and select the font.

Step 2. Add Your Images

Images are essential to an eye-catching and memorable flyer.

To insert your image, click on the image placeholder. You may have to first ungroup the object on your template, to isolate the image placeholder. To do so, right-click on the object and click on Group > Ungroup.

Right-click on the image placeholder and click Change Picture > From a File….

Find the photo you want to use in your computer and click Insert.

Inserting a photo

As with the text box, click-and-drag one of the handles of the image to resize it.

Tip: For the most professional results, avoid using free stock photos on your flyer. Use your own images or premium stock photos such as the ones from Envato Elements. Your Envato Elements subscription includes unlimited downloads of photos at no additional cost.

Step 3. Add Your Branding Logo and Colors

With the text and images added, the flyer is almost done!

All that remains for us to do is to brand it with the company’s logo and colors.

If your template has a placeholder for the logo, then follow the instructions in Step 2 to replace it with your logo.

Otherwise, insert the logo onto the page. Click Insert > Pictures > Picture from File.

Create a flyer in Word by adding logos

Find the logo file in your computer and click Insert. If necessary, resize the logo and drag it into place.

Brand the flyer with your logo

Now, let’s apply our branding colors to the different objects on the flyer.

To change the color of the text, select the text and click the Font Color drop-down arrow. Next select a color or click More Colors to specify any color you want.

Choosing colors

To change the color of a shape, select the shape. Go to Format > Format Object….

The Format Shape interface opens. Make the changes you wish to make, including changing the transparency of the object.

Formatting Images

Tip: When inserting images and changing colors, consider your printing budget. In general, the more colors you use, the more it’ll cost you to print and make copies of your flyer. If you’re printing the flyer yourself, you may prefer to make colored images smaller to save on the amount of color ink it requires. Back-to-back printing also increases your cost, so consider making a one-sided flyer. If you’re using a printing service, ask your service provider for more advice on how to stay within your budget.

If you’re making a double-sided flyer, repeat steps 1 to 3 on page 2 of the flyer.
